Biblical Toponymy of the United States

Toponymy is the study of names for places, their origins, and meaning. The U.S. has a vast, Biblical toponymy, having derived many names from the Good Book for its towns, cities, geographic features, etc.

Here is one such example: In the Bible, it is said that Noak’s Ark came to rest on the Ararat Mountains.

Genesis 8:4

“And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.”

– King James Bible, “Authorized Version,” Cambridge Edition

And here are several, American toponyms derived from this scripture:

  • Ararat, North Carolina
  • Ararat, Virginia
  • Ararat River, Virginia
  • Ararat Township, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania
  • Mount Ararat (Pennsylvania)
